“The rain surrounded the cabin … with a whole world of meaning, of secrecy, of rumor. Think of it: all that speech pouring down, selling nothing, judging nobody, drenching the thick mulch of dead leaves, soaking the trees, filling the gullies and crannies of the wood with water, washing out the places where men have stripped the hillside.

What a thing it is to sit absolutely alone, in the forest, at night, cherished by this wonderful, unintelligible, perfectly innocent speech, the most comforting speech in the world, the talk that rain makes by itself all over the ridges, and the talk of the watercourses everywhere in the hollows!

Nobody started it, nobody is going to stop it. It will talk as long as it wants, the rain.

“There is joy to be found in the most minuscule of choice, in the pockets of slowness concealed inside each ordinary day: 10 minutes in the morning in which to write down our dreams, 5 minutes in the late afternoon in which to stand by a window & watch the changing colors of the sunset, another pause before bed for a brief moment of prayer. Such things do not demand an inordinate commitment. From outside, our lives may look much as they have always done. We alone will recognize the small, rejuvenating pleasures…” — Christian McEwen, World Enough & Time

The holiday season in December is rich with activity and traditions. Most of us need to wrestle with the abundance -- making choices to keep in balance and seeking the original intent of the holidays in order to find and feel meaning.

The holiday season in December is rich with activity and traditions. Most of us need to wrestle with the abundance — making choices to keep in balance and seeking the original intent of the holidays in order to find and feel meaning.

The spiritual practice of Stillness can be of great help. It doesn’t require us to make another appointment on our calendar or to drop an activity from our day. It is a mental attitude, an approach to life that centers and brings us back in balance.

If stillness is an idea you’d like to explore you might like to begin by asking yourself these questions:

What does stillness mean to me? How do I define it?

What does stillness include? (listening, openness …)

Where and when am I able to be still?

What are the benefits from being still? How can stillness be of benefit to more than my own coping mechanism … how can it play out in the world?
