How to Let Go of the World

I recently saw the new documentary by Josh Fox, director of Gasland, with the amazingly long but thought provoking title “How to Let Go of the World and Love All The Things Climate Can’t Change.” It was brilliant. Perhaps a bit long in length (and title), but so on point!

The movie begins with Josh dancing a jig in his beloved creek. He’s celebrating a modest victory – fracking in his region has been banned. His creek is saved. He’s saved his little part of the world and would like to live out the rest of his days there and be happy.

The thrill is short lived as he realizes he can’t close out the rest of the world and the truth is – there is so much more to do to make the world a better place. Feelings of sadness begin to overwhelm him. But in the middle of his sorrow a moment of insight breaks Screen Shot 2016-06-29 at 10.18.58 AMthrough. He asks himself, “What are the things climate change can’t destroy? What are the parts of us that are so deep that no storm can take them away? Let me think on those things.”

With that simple question he becomes energized to find out what values can be re-imagined to make today a better day and place. He interviews individuals and communities that are turning the corner of isolation and depletion and building anew. He discovers a set of principles/values underlying their actions and maintaining their sense of well-being. They include spiritual qualities such as Resilience, Courage, Innovation, Love, Creativity. And, he exposes the counter forces attempting to keep us isolated and disconnected from the rest of the world.

The set of interviews form a tapestry of hope and comfort. They offer a template, a set of ingredients, for how to continue the work of shifting our own and humanity’s collective values and behaviors to live more lightly and lovingly on Earth.

Thanks Josh for sharing your journey and for this offering of love.
